The Perfect Double Play

by Cliff Blackerby, Master Gardener

Bush with red flowersSpirea Double Play Red is a wonderful little plant designated a ‘Proven Winner’. Plants selected as ‘Proven Winners” are tested for health, vigor and ease of culture in test gardens all over the world. Double Play Red puts on a show of rich burgundy foliage in the spring followed by beautiful red, flat topped flowers. It is hailed as the first truly red Spirea.

The plant grows 24-36 inches tall with a dense rounded spread. The cultivar is drought and wind hardy, grows well in soil conditions in our area, even clay soils. Prune in late winter or early spring since flowers are formed on new wood. Another plus is it is deer resistant while attracting bees, hummingbirds and butterflies. Spirea Double Play Red is perfect when used as a foundation plant, in borders or mixed borders and containers. This plant will be a great addition to any sunny garden.
